(*) Since `scope` was implemented much later than `in`, IIRC, the 
compiler didn't enforce the safety checks without both 
`-preview=dip1000` and `-preview=in`, so there had been many 
instances where functions were written without regard for the 
`scope` characteristic of `in`.
