The Steam Deck is more than just a gaming handheld for Steam
games. With proper configuration, it can also run Xbox Cloud
Gaming, enabling you to stream your Xbox Game Pass library
directly to your device. This guide walks you through the process
of setting up Xbox Cloud on your Steam Deck, ensuring a seamless
gaming experience without the need for large downloads.

1. Switch to Desktop Mode
Start by putting your Steam Deck into desktop mode. You can do
this by pressing the Steam button to open the main menu, then
selecting Power and choosing Switch to Desktop. This gives you
access to the Linux-based desktop interface, allowing you to
install software outside of Steam’s ecosystem. If you have a
dock, using a mouse and keyboard will make the process easier,
though it’s not essential.

2. Install Microsoft Edge
Xbox Cloud Gaming runs through the Microsoft Edge browser, so
your next step is to install Edge on your Steam Deck. Open the
Discover application (the Steam Deck’s equivalent of an app
store) and search for Microsoft Edge. Install it from the
Internet category.

3. Give Edge the Necessary Permissions
Once Microsoft Edge is installed, it needs special permissions to
function correctly. This requires using the Konsole application,
which allows you to input commands in the terminal. Open Konsole
from the system category and enter the following command:

typescript
flatpak --user override --filesystem=/run/udev:ro
com.microsoft.Edge

This command grants Microsoft Edge the access it needs to run
properly on the Steam Deck. After running the command, press
Enter and close Konsole.

4. Add Xbox Cloud to Your Steam Library
Now, it’s time to add Xbox Cloud Gaming to your Steam library.
Stay in desktop mode, and find Microsoft Edge in your
applications list. Right-click on it and select Add to Steam.
This will create a shortcut for Xbox Cloud Gaming that you can
access through the Steam interface.

5. Customize the Shortcut
Switch back to Steam mode and navigate to your library. Find the
new Xbox Cloud shortcut (listed under Microsoft Edge), click on
the gear icon next to it, and select Properties. Rename the
shortcut to "Xbox Cloud" for easier access, and customize the
icon if desired.

Next, go to the Launch Options section, and append the following
code to the end of the existing command string:

--window-size=1024,640 --force-device-scale-factor=1.25
--device-scale-factor=1.25 --kiosk "https://www.xbox.com/play"

This command ensures the browser opens in the correct window size
and directs it to the Xbox Cloud Gaming page.

6. Launch and Play Xbox Games
Once all configurations are complete, go back to Steam OS, and
you’ll find Xbox Cloud in your Steam library. Launch it, and the
Xbox Cloud Gaming page will open. You can now start playing any
Game Pass title available to you.

The Steam Deck’s control layout is configured by default to use
gamepad with joystick trackpad, which works well for navigating
the service. If you prefer a different control style, you can
adjust this in the Steam menu.

When launching for the first time, you’ll need to log in to your
Xbox account. Once done, your login credentials will be saved,
and you’ll remain logged in even after rebooting the Steam Deck.

By following these steps, you can easily set up and enjoy Xbox
Cloud Gaming on your Steam Deck, opening up a whole new world of
gaming possibilities.
