Since I assume one of those is a windows machine, I'd just be 
inclined to use CIFS.

As windows, macOS, and Linux will all have support out of the box 
- the latter may need samba installed, not sure.

If windows wasn't in the mix, and since it is a private LAN, I'd 
just use NFS - despite its flaws.
