I self-host. I'm planning to deploy other services in the future, 
and self-hosting ends up being much cheaper. As for GitHub Pages, 
I don't have much hands-on experience with it, but it seems like 
a solid option for static sites: easy to deploy, minimal 
maintenance.

I use Cloudflare. Their dashboard lets you configure bot 
protection, so you can block web crawlers, set up rate limiting, 
etc.
