Discord provides slightly different experience, closer to 
real-time chat, than forum does.
And it is more modern technology with some extra functionality, 
that are not available in NG forum (like dms, media content like 
screenshots, video/audio calls with screensharing, dark theme, 
different API integrations including bridging to other messaging 
protocols and programmable bots that can react on some GH events)

It is more about community-building, then about technical only 
messages.
If speaking from educational perspective (as I know you are from 
academia) - 2 different things like remote zoom-lectures and 
normal universities where students are listening lectures in 
auditoriums. Hybrid format probably is the best.. so some 
discussions are better in Discord, but for example DIP 
investigations are better in Forum.
