Politics is a thing, no one is safe from its stupidiest twists.
Github is owned by USA company, Gitlab is EU based organization.
Guess what? As one of those "bad countries"(tm) citizen I see 
more risks in dealing with EU than US. By risks here I mean 
immediate shutting off services and revoking licenses without 
grace period or even notification.
