OK, I miscalculated, it's actually closer to 40M LOC, lol.  But still,
large enough not to sneeze at.

No, just a huge patchwork of lot of legacy code written over the course
of the last 20-25 years or so.  A lot of stuff from 20 years ago that
nobody dares to touch because it Just Works(tm) (well, *most* of the
time) and nobody understands it anymore 'cos the original dev has moved
on.  The evil strcat's and strcpy's are mostly in this code.
