At least I can keep it alive by discussing the actual topic at 
hand [which was, at least initially, of interest to me], rather 
than intentionally using language that moves the discussion away 
from being a productive analysis, towards one involving personal 
attacks that question people motives, their intelligence, and 
their character.

Provocateur - One who deliberately provokes a situation or 
argument to cause trouble or reaction.

Instigator - The person who initiates or starts the conflict, 
argument, or trouble.

Agitator - A person who stirs up political or social trouble; 
often used for people trying to provoke mass action or disorder.

Antagonist - A person who actively opposes or is hostile to 
others; an adversary.
