There are embedded systems. These include ARM processors like the TI
Cortex-M3

line and similar. They don't need to run an OS, per se. They use one
of several tiny IP stacks, such as lwIP
<http://savannah.nongnu.org/projects/lwip/> which doesn't have a
standard sockets interface.
