At the time I was setting up greylisting on my system a few months
ago, the sendmail package in Debian had a functioning milter
interface, and the Debian exim didn't, so I switched from exim to
sendmail.

If you're using binary packages, then package availability may
determine which mailer you use.  If you're compiling from source, this
is less of an issue.
