I use HTML entities:

 joe@example.invalid

(that's 'ampersand' #64 ';' in case something interprets it 
on the way.)

That's simpler and more robust than using javascript, and 
nicer than "joe <at> ...", and I guess most harvesters 
don't bother decoding even that.
