I've known too many people with huge amounts of experience (and in 
several cases huge wealth from their successes) whose knowledge was 
significantly inferior to people far below them in experience and 
success (and sometimes the less successful people even worked in the 
same company!).

NB: This may be too much influenced by my background in large coporates; 
perhaps I'm too cynical. However, I've been BS'd by some people you 
would have thought (from reading a CV) you could trust, but I just 
happened to be very experienced in the same field (through random 
chance; given my career and degree you wouldn't have expected it) and 
was able to call them out on it.

My day job includes cutting through a lot of BS, and I'm English. 
Cynicism is a way of life ;).
