So.. the situation is so bad that you can't install ANY packages anymore. 
Accidently removing packages can make the system unbootable and those 
application are gone for good (unless you do a fresh reinstall). My bet 
is that if it isn't already impossible to upgrade to a new version, when 
they remove the repositories for the next Ubuntu version, you're 
completely fucked up.
