I have something that logs almost the same messages as yours.
What I observed is that milter or sendmail runs out of resources.
In my case it is descriptors limit. I am also using milter from 
clamav and just before relaydelay kicks the bucket it shows me something 
like this:
  accept() returned invalid socket (Too many open files), try again

Well, I cannot raise limits for the machines at the moment :( so all I can 
do is try to tweak things a bit just for milter, wich seems to not accept 
any added bonuses :(
