Is there any way of coaxing web-news to show you the beginning of a thread?

Internet time is expensive and slow where I am, so searching back over many days is a put-off.

I think this is quite important, as readers in the less privileged countries might want to get an edge by learning about the most advanced technology. I put D in that class!
