You may want to use NNTP access instead of web-news. Do you use
Thunderbird? If so:
* Create a "news account" and have the server point to
news.digitalmars.com. Set your name, email etc. as needed. Finish the
dialog.
* Then select the newly created account in the left-hand side tree view
and click "Manage subscriptions". Subscribe to digitalmars.d etc.
* When you'll first connect you'll be asked "Download 500 headers or all
headers". Don't download all headers because there's very many of them.
Download 500 or less and then right click on the group and "Mark as read".
* After you connected once, select the digitalmars.d group and
right-click and select "Properties" then the "Offline" tab. Select
"Select this group for offline use", then Ok.
* From then on, when you want to slurp all new messages efficiently,
just connect the modem, go in the main menu at File/Offline/Work
Offline, wait for the status bar to indicate you downloaded everything
and went offline, and disconnect the modem. You can then compose
messages etc. while staying offline. When you connect the modem again,
go File/Offline and deselect "Work Offline". If you wrote messages they
will be sent at that time.
