Everything compiles fine for me now (I noticed that overloading on "ref"ness is declaration order
dependent, not sure what the plan is for that).

However, I now get some data corruption in seemingly innocent places at runtime and some crashes
with unhelpful stack traces. It wasn't possible to debug this in a hurry and I won't get to this
until Wednesday, though.
